Shane Dawson x Jeffree Star Conspiracy Palette Review
It’s been a hot minute since I’ve written a blog post, but I was so excited about the Shane Dawson x Jeffree Star Conspiracy Palette that I decided to actually write a review. I don’t normally get excited for makeup launches, but like so many others, I became completely wrapped up in Shane Dawson’s Youtube series about the creation of his Jeffree Star Cosmetics collection. I felt as if I was involved in the making of the palette, the choosing/formulation of the shades, and the designing of the packaging. The whole series was a stroke of marketing genius, and I am more than happy to support that with my dollar. I’m not going to get into summarizing the series here, but if you are interested in the inner workings of the beauty industry, I highly suggest looking it up on Shane’s channel.
Getting my hands on the Conspiracy Palette was absolute insanity. In the final Youtube episode, Jeffree Star assures us that Shopify (the selling platform that Jeffree Star Cosmetics uses for their site) is fully prepared for the unprecedented traffic anticipated for the day of the launch. However, the site crashed the minute the collection launched. The site would intermittently come back, and I sat at my computer for over an hour and a half trying to make it through the check out process. Eventually I had to give up and the Conspiracy Palette sold out. That night, I noticed that resellers had already started listing the $52 palette for sale on Poshmark for $125-$200, promising to ship the palette to their buyer as soon as they received their order in the mail. However, I found a few sellers who actually had the palette in hand after purchasing it at a Morphe store that day. For the sake of getting this review up early, I took the plunge and purchased a Conspiracy Palette from one of these sellers for $100 plus shipping.
So let’s get down to the palette itself. It features 18 matte, metallic, and foil shades. In true Jeffree Star style, the packaging is lux and over-the-top. I don’t think any other beauty brand puts as much money and effort into their packaging as Jeffree Star Cosmetics! The shade range is certainly very unique and the lack of a cohesive color story will bother some people. I would not consider this to be a beginner-friendly eyeshadow palette as quite a few of the colors are a bit intimidating. However, if you love brights and already have a bit of an eyeshadow collection, you will probably find some shades in this palette that you’ve never owned before. I love that the top row includes 3 mattes blending/transition shades (My Pills, Tanacon, and Diet Root Beer) so you can create an entire eye look using only the Conspiracy Palette. I also love the versatility of this palette. You can just as easily create a wearable, neutral look using Just a Theory, Spiraling, Not a Fact, Sleep Paralysis, and Diet Root Beer as you can create something colorful and avant garde with Food Videos, Trisha, Flaming Hot, and Cheese Dust.
For the look above, I used Pig-ment, Cheese Dust, Food Videos, and Ranch. Though I have not yet worn every shade beyond swatching them, I am pleased with all of the shades I have played with. Dipping in with a brush can create some kick up in the pan so you do need to make sure to use a light hand. I am also finding that the lighter matte shades need to be packed onto sticky base in order to be impactful, but that’s pretty typical. All of the metallics are super buttery!
The Shane Dawson x Jeffree Star Conspiracy Palette is still currently sold out, but keep an eye out for when it restocks! Other products from their collaboration are still available here. While you’re at it, you can also pick up my holy grail Jeffree Star Cosmetics Magic Star Setting Powder which completely prevents my under eye concealer from creasing!
